Did New York Steal Philly's Love?
Did New York City steal Philadelphia's "Love" sign? I associate this sign with Philly. Not sure why but I saw it there first so I was surprised to see the "Love" sign on 6th Avenue. Oh well, New York steals from lots of places and we could all use more love.

Santa Skating in New York City
Santa decided to take a break from Christmas activities to join New Yorkers skating in Times Square. Nice of Santa to stop by. The picture looked like a painting so I finished the job with Photoshop.

What kids want at Christmas
Note to Santa on my Mom's Christmas Tree. Hope everyone got what they wanted. My Mon's tree should be placed in the Christmas Tree Hall of Fame. She has it going on.

San Jose Christmas
Shooting right into the sun so not a great time of day for this shot but it looks a little like a Christmas card, so I will go with it. Next year, have to get to San Jose and stay overnight. Looks like a fun area to shoot Christmas shots.

San Jose Christmas Display
Timing is everything and unfortunately mine was not good as I had to visit the San Jose Christmas tree display during the daytime. It must be wonderful to see at night. The flip side is that it is much warmer during the day.

Christmas Time In Gotham
Like most big cities, New York gets its Christmas on near the holidays. Of course, it is New York, so it has to be big....

West Side Story
Whenever I see these types of buildings in New York or wherever I happen to be, I always think of those ads for West Side Story, although I think I was actually on the East Side when I took this shot.

Strip District and Convention Center
If you are going to have a Convention Center, you might as well have a Strip District nearby. As far as I can tell from Wikipedia, there has never been any stripping on the small strip of land called the Strip District in Pittsburg. Taken during a spring trip to Pittsburg.

First Snowman
The snow was a little weak but just sticky enough to make a snowman. William wanted to knock it down more than help, but we got it done.

Let it Snow
Beautiful snow fall today and during the night last night. Surprising, as I didn't think it was supposed to snow. Got the dog to go out for a walk in the woods. She is always good for a walk no matter the weather.

It's so cold the stairs are crying
Even the stairs can't take the cold anymore. Looked like they were crying on my way in to the Nuveen building yesterday. The forecast is for a slight warming so hopefully, we catch a break over the weekend.

The colors of Fremont Street show well, asking you to come and lose some money, while having fun doing it.

LA Century
See this view a lot in my travels. Occasionally get stay here. Right next to the Fox Studios but haven't spied any celebrities yet. Just former muni bond managers.

Nelson Mandela....free at last
I was thinking of posting this shot anyway over the past couple of days and now with Nelson Mandela's passing today, I thought it was appropriate. Strange walking past the South African embassy last month and seeing this statue behind a chain linked fence as they do repairs to the nearby sidewalk.

What I want for Christmas
Christmas is way to commercialized. Always has been but it seems so much so now. That doesn't mean that I can post a couple of thing I want. What I really want is time to read as many books as I possibly can. I don't know why, but it does drive me. However, shopping at Derby Books in Salem takes you life in your hand. I would love to see a chain reaction of hundreds of books falling. That would be cool.....

Things to be Thankful for
How can you resist that face? Lots to be Thankful for this year. Got a full house coming over. Should be fun.

Millionaires Row Washington DC
Lots of wonderful buildings in the DuPont Circle neighborhood in Washington DC. Here is a great example along what used to be called Millionaires Row.

Moon rising over Russian Cathedral in Washington DC
Caught the moon rising over the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. John the Baptist located on Embassy Row between the National Cathedral and the Navel Observatory in Washington DC. Hard to see in a small thumb print, but the moon gave a good view next the to cross on top of the church.

Dupont Circle
One of my favorite places to visit is the Dupont Circle neighborhood in Washington DC. Nice collection of bookstores, bars and restaurants in a residential area near the White House. I always look forwards to visits to that part of the country.

Things are looking up at Aria
Quite an attractive hotel, the site of the movie, Last Vegas, but some say a little cold and impersonal. Most hotels are like that for me anyway, so I don't have an opinion one way or the other.

View From the stage of the Chicago Theater
A wide angle, somewhat distorted view of the seating area from the stage of the beautiful Chicago Theater. I think I was standing back in 2010 right where Stephi got to sit this past May right before her Valedictorian speech. Weird.

Back Inside the Chicago Theater
Back in 2010, I did a tour of the inside of the wonderful art deco Chicago Theater. That post from
October 10, 2010 happens to be one of my top hits on this blog. Not sure why but the title "Chicago Theater from the Inside" a literal description of the shot (http://mdshotoftheday.blogspot.com/2010/10/chicago-theater-from-inside.html) must match some popular search term for finding out what is up in the Chicago theater scene. I thought I would mine that photo shoot for some additional shots. Love the interior view of this wonderful theater. Plus, Stephanie got to give her Valedictorian speech here this past May, which was very cool.

Maybe one last shot from the Lisle Arboretum of the beautiful fall colors as the weather starts to finally turn colder.

Took some winter pictures this week up in the mountain but I can't let fall get by without some fall colors to shoot. This is from the beautiful Lisle Arboretum.

First Snowman of the Season
Got in the first snowman of the season off of a scenic overlook on the Donner Pass. Time was limited so just a tiny one, but it counts....

Donner Pass--Winter is Coming
The calendar said October, the weather man said "snow" and that is what we got traveling over the Donner Pass while traveling over the Sierra Nevada's between Sacramento and Reno. Strange to see so much snow so early. Beautiful, but as the picture below shows, somewhat scary.

Halloween Washout
Halloween 2013 looks like a total rainout. Lots of rain dampened trick-or-treat festivities. Now we are left to wonder, who going to eat all that candy?

Corn Row
Got a shot of a corn row while taking a hay ride with the grandson. Hard to make a shot of fall corn interesting, but I like the shot.

Beautiful, but cool fall day for shots up and around the hill where the National Cathedral is located. Quite an imposing structure.

Seattle's Sanitary Public Market
Apparently, the other Public Market, which is across the street from this one in Seattle, isn't sanitary, or at least that is what we are supposed to think. Actually, the name came about since horses were not allowed in, which in today's age would cause activists to fight for horse's rights.

Seattle Building in Blue
I have been lucky with the weather so far this year. Caught Seattle a few weeks ago with great weather and mostly clear blue skies. Was heading into a meeting and caught this view by looking up.

Inside Ragin Cajun
Despite the stacks of books, this is a restaurant, not a book store. These books are either on the making of Gumbo, Jambalaya or yearbooks for Southwestern Louisiana State University. With those as a theme, you know you are in the south as this is Ragin Cajun a famous restaurant in Houston. Not sure anyone reads these books but they give the place some character. Great food too.
