The shot above is of a bird that I see all the time as the Red-bellied Woodpecker often visits my bird feeder. For the life of me, I couldn't understand the name. Red-bellied? The belly is white, with maybe a hint of color. Why not red headed? Well, when I finally saw a Red-Headed Woodpecker in person, it made total sense. You can't not call the bird in the shot below anything other than red headed. He looks so formal in his distinct and well drawn out colors. So, we have to have two different names for these birds, but I still don't see much red, if any, in the Red-bellied.
