They have an unusual building code in Old San Juan. Your building must have a different color from any building to either side. Windows and doors must generally be highlighted by white. In return for keeping this building code, you are exempt from paying property tax. The area ends up being very colorful and great for the tourist trade. Eventually, they plan on turning the whole area, about a mile square on each side, into a no car zone. Would make a great area even better.
